Episode 155: Spam, Spam, Spam, Spam, and Spam!
We’re not quite two months into 8th Edition, and it seems that Matched Play 40K has a bit of a spam problem. Of course, for gamers in general and 40k players in particular, spam is nothing new. In this episode, we delve into the topic of spam in 40K. What is it? Is it an acceptable army-building strategy? Is it a problem, and if so, who’s to blame? And what, if anything, can or should be done about it? Also, we talk about the brand-new 1.1 FAQs from GW, which include a number of changes that try to address the current flavor of spam. All this, hobby progress, and your listener mail!

Fun episode… some thoughts…
Back in 3rd edition GW did address some broken rules (Blood Angels Rhino Rush) with a full revamp to the aspects of the rules (TAR) that really just addressed this issue and primarily this army; but yeah since then that sort of thing was unheard of. I love how they addressed the flyer spam.
That Blood Angels list… Death Company dreadnoughts are super expensive, and like you guys said, without a transport it’s not useful, don’t take 2. He could save points on the Blood Talons (yuck) and take the cheaper Fists as well. Agree on Astorath over Mephiston if you can stomach taking that model with its cheesy Ward fluff.
Assault-Alpha-strike is a trap, it’s not worth even trying. If you do make the 9″ charge, maybe your buff character fails his (no more IC rule) and A) your unit is weaker, and B) your character is now out in the open. Beta strike, as you guys suggested is much smarter.
Regarding spam… well the arguments are all old. I played every edition and I’ve always had utter disdain for “WAAC” types, and firmly put the blame on them for those WAAC builds making there way into regular gaming. You mentioned MTG, it wasn’t just that people were preparing for the ‘pro’ circuit, it was that people were expecting to face those decks/lists, and so it was a virtual arms race at the army/deck building phase.
After the Ravenspam list won we saw it everywhere – after the Conscript-spam lists did well we saw them flood events and moreover make there way in the general conscious of regular gaming.
Americans especially don’t like to lose – when you can buy more and better toys to win, that’s what WAAC is about, not necessarily being a skilled player; though sure, some of those folks are certainly skilled as well.
Now – I must admit, I’ve had a little bit of a turn around; I still find ‘WAAC’ spamming to ‘win at toys’ pretty sad on a personal level, but now that GW is, currently, fully interactive I can finally appreciate the benefits of that aspect of the community. Before now, we’d be dealing with YEARS of Ravenspam and Conscripst-spam until the newer better ‘spam’ list came to counter it, or until communities or TO’s made house-rules to fix… it made the game so unenjoyable at times. Now – that GW is addressing these issues I find I am far more welcoming of the “competitive” community. I do hope that GW is able to stay on top though now that the precedence is set.
Anyway you guys really are enjoyable to listen to while painting, thanks for the show.
